What is Social Media?

When discussing social media, it is often assumed that there is an inherent understanding of the topic that is being discussed, and while it may seem obvious, there is actually no widely accepted definition of the term. That being said, it is important to know and understand the context in which the term is being used. I will be using the following definition while discussing social media throughout this blog:
Noun; treated as singular or plural; Websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.
So, with this definition, social media is defined as any website or application that allows people to interact with others. It is a way to connect whether it is through images, videos, text posts, interactives, direct messaging, and even verbal communication. You can break down the term to uncover its meaning as well:
Social: refers to interacting with other people by sharing and receiving information.
Media: refers to the instrument of communication.

By putting these two terms together, we can infer that social media means communicating/interacting with others through media.
